Algorithms produce data. I make people understand it.
25 years of turning complexity into clarity. Hi, I'm Matze – Interaction Designer from Zürich.
My first CRM interface for Deutsche Bank was designed under pressure at 1)gravity. That moment kickstarted a career at the intersection of data, interaction, and visual storytelling – from energy trading dashboards to gesture-controlled museum installations to AI-driven identity verification at an ETH spin-off.
Along the way, I learned that the best visualizations don't just display information – they invite exploration. Complex data deserves design that listens first.
Selected Projects
From algorithms to understanding
These four projects show how I approach the IVIA Lab's core challenge: making complex data and AI systems tangible through interaction design.
Building trust through radical clarity
How gesture tracking made flying tangible
How curiosity doubled lead conversion
How I work
Research → Prototype → Validate → Ship
I don't start with pixels. I start with understanding.
- Interactive Visualization: D3.js, SVG systems, parametrized infographics – data made explorable, not just viewable
- Design Systems: Atomic Design, Figma tokens, component libraries – scalable foundations that accelerate iteration
- Prototyping & Testing: ProtoPie with sensors, Figma prototypes, usability testing – interaction logic validated before code
- Developer Collaboration: Specifications that engineering teams trust, HTML/CSS fluency, shared language
I measure what works – and iterate based on evidence, not assumptions.
What I bring
Experience where research meets product
You need someone who builds at the intersection of data, interaction, and visual systems.
AI-Driven Identity Verification (PXL Vision, ETH Spin-off): Built UX from scratch – design system, annotation workflows (72% faster review), 30-second onboarding flows. Learned to work where research meets production.
Interactive Museum Installations (Eyecatcher): Gesture-controlled flight simulator for Verkehrshaus Luzern – 6000+ visitors, Kinect, gamification. Learned that complexity is only powerful when people can touch it.
Banking Design System (LUKB): Migrated fragmented Sketch components to unified Figma system. SVG illustrations: 96% data reduction. 12-month workshop program. Learned that systems thinking scales impact.
My goal at the IVIA Lab: bring 25 years of making the complex tangible to interactive human-AI collaboration interfaces – starting with the visualization patterns that matter most to your research.
What you get
A designer who ships research-grade visuals
Practical impact, not just pretty prototypes.
- Full interaction design toolkit – wireframes, mockups, prototypes, design system contributions, d3.js visualizations, SVG asset pipelines
- ETH ecosystem experience – PXL Vision taught me how research institutions think, iterate, and collaborate
- Gamification that works – storytelling, state transitions, user activation – tested with real audiences, not assumptions
- Small-team agility – 25 years in 3-to-8-person teams, rapid iteration, direct communication, shared ownership
What excites me
Interdisciplinary teams, real problems
I thrive where questions matter more than answers.
At PXL Vision, I worked as Solo UX Lead in close collaboration with CPO and international dev teams – rapid iteration, continuous testing, measurable outcomes. At LUKB, I facilitated co-creation workshops that turned abstract banking requirements into concrete UX strategies. At 1)gravity, I built a design unit from 0 to 8 designers. What connects all three: small teams, big complexity, shared curiosity.
If you think the same way …
Let's make AI collaboration visible
Design isn't decoration. It's the interface between what machines compute and what humans comprehend.
I've spent 25 years proving that research-driven design delivers measurable results – from a 72% reduction in task time to museum installations that engage thousands. For the IVIA Lab, I'm ready to do the same.
Thanks for reading this far
Let's talk about which XAI visualization patterns you're exploring first.
What I’m working on right now!
Thanks for your time! Matze
